Anyone who lives in Sarasota has probably heard of Nik Wallenda. The King of the Wire, as he is known, is a seventh-generation member of the famous Flying Wallendas. Although Nik's circus ancestors date back to the 18th century, the Flying Wallendas have been walking the high wire, sans nets, since the roaring 20s. Nik is the guy who walked the wire across Niagara Falls last June. In a few days he plans to do it again — this time over the Grand Canyon.
For the past few weeks, he's been training at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota and has allowed the public to come and cheer him on as he practices. Today, I watched as he walked in the rain while chatting with his staff and onlookers. He put on a show for his fans, lying down on the wire and sitting and chatting for a while before he stood up again and plodded on.
Be sure to watch Sunday, 7 pm EDT, on the Discovery Channel. Circus Sarasota has planned a street party downtown with big-screen viewing of the event live.
Go get 'em, Nik. We'll be watching.
